The Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Gdańsk is honored to host a special international family law seminar led by Professor Dr. Lukas Rademacher from Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (Kiel University, Germany).
Date: 29 May 2025
Time: 11:30
Venue: Room 2014, Faculty of Law and Administration
Language: English with Polish translation available
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Professor Rademacher holds the Chair of Civil Law, Private International Law, and Comparative Law at the University of Kiel and serves as Co-Director of the Institute for European and International Private and Procedural Law. Before assuming his current position in February 2023, Professor Rademacher worked on the Academic Research Council at the University of Cologne, where he completed his Habilitation in 2022. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Münster in 2016.
Professor Rademacher's research focuses on cross-border legal relations, with particular emphasis on international family law and the coordination of different legal systems in our increasingly globalized society.
SEMINAR TOPIC
The seminar will address the highly significant theoretical and practical challenges related to determining applicable law in filiation (parenthood) relations, with special focus on the European Commission's proposed regulation on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition of decisions, and acceptance of authentic instruments in matters of parenthood.
Topics to be discussed include:
• Current challenges in cross-border recognition of parenthood
• The European Commission's 2022 proposal for harmonizing private international law rules in filiation matters
• Applicable law for establishing parenthood in cross-border situations
• The proposed European Certificate of Parenthood and its implications
• Conflict of laws considerations related to filiation and parenthood recognition
This seminar is particularly timely as European legislators continue to work on this important regulation that aims to strengthen the protection of children's rights in cross-border situations, including their right to identity, non-discrimination, and family life.
The topic has significant implications for both legal theory and practice, touching on fundamental aspects of family law, private international law, constitutional rights, and EU legal mechanisms. The proposed EU regulation represents an important step toward ensuring that parenthood established in one EU Member State is recognized across all Member States, thus providing much-needed legal certainty for families in cross-border situations.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This seminar will be valuable for:
• Faculty members and researchers in family law, private international law, EU law, and constitutional law
• Doctoral and advanced law students
• Legal practitioners working with international family cases
• Judges and legal professionals dealing with cross-border parenthood issues
We cordially invite all faculty members, researchers, and students to participate in this exceptional opportunity to engage with one of Europe's leading experts in international family law.
The Faculty extends its sincere gratitude to Professor Arkadiusz Wowerka (Division of Private International Law) for organizing this valuable academic event.
